Bowhunters Heading Afield

The good news for archery enthusiasts across much of America is that the bowhunting seasons are opening soon—or open—in many states and regions. For most hunters this means tranquil hours perched in treestands in wait for a passing deer while clutching a bow and arrows.

This season could be a little different for some hunters.

Some states are requesting that hunters take notes and report wildlife sightings. In Missouri, hunters are asked to participate in a Bowhunter Observation Survey. The Missouri Conservation Department needs bowhunters to record the deer, turkeys and furbearers they see while hunting. This information helps biologists gauge the health of wildlife populations and set hunting regulations. To participate, send an email to paul.rogers@mdc.mo.gov. Write “Bowhunter Observation Survey” in the subject line, and don’t forget to include your name and mailing address.

Another issue facing hunters this season is deer diseases. Missouri is asking hunters to be aware of—and report—indications of Chronic Wasting Disease. In North Carolina, the state’s Wildlife Resources Commission reports an epidemic of hemorrhagic disease in the white-tailed deer population in several western counties.
