Points for Callers 1. First identify yourself, and what town you are calling from. Legislators and their staff are much more responsive to constituents. 2. Ask for the Representative. If they are not available, ask for the person who handles legislation. 3. For whoever you wind up speaking to, tell them why you are calling: “I am calling because I oppose the new dog law bill – HB 2525 – that has just been introduced. This bill could hurt many sporting dog kennels. While I am concerned about puppy mills, I know a bill can be passed that does not harm us. Please ask Representative ____________ to help pass a bill that addresses puppy mills and protects sportsmen and sportswomen.” 4. If you are speaking to staff, ask for a return telephone call so you can hear whether the Representative is going to help us. 5. If you are speaking to the Representative, ask for a commitment to help us. If they need time to think, ask for a return call. 6. Be sure to leave your telephone number. 7. Call Mandy Warble with the US Sportsmen’s Alliance at 1-888-930-4868 ext 208. She can also be emailed at mwarble@ussportsmen.org. Let Mandy know how the call went and what you found out. That way we can let our lobbyists know, and we can all stay on the same page. REMEMBER: No matter how the call goes, be firm, but be polite. Thanks for contacting your legislator. It will make a difference!
