Lead Ban Not Expanded in California Condor Range
8/12/09 On August 6, the California Fish and Game Commission voted not to expand the existing ban on the use of lead ammunition within the “Condor Zone.” In 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation prohibiting lead ammunition in the California condor’s range due to concerns that the ingestion of lead from carcasses shot during hunting season may pose a threat to the endangered bird. A subsequent lawsuit led the state Fish and Game Commission to consider an expansion of the territory where lead would be banned. However, after examining all of the existing data, the Commission voted 4-1 at the meeting not to expand the ban.
